The other day I was standing in the produce isle bagging some nectarines into a sack when I got that feeling of someone staring. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a middle aged woman looking over at the kids and I with a not so fabulous look on her face. Ava was in the larger part of the cart drinking a Jamba Juice, while Nolan was in the top seat of the cart. I initially looked over at her and then back down at what I was doing, not really thinking anything of it. Then, she decided to walk closer to us. I put the last nectarine in the bag, placed them into the cart and moved my way over to the bananas.

She followed.

I went over to grab some cabbage and continued feeling her awkward eyes upon us. Either, stop staring or say what you have to say lady! Didn’t your mama teach you it wasn’t polite to stare?! I then started looking around the kids and my body thinking there was something on us. Did I leave some of my lunch on my face? Did I have a booger? Did one of the kids have a flesh eating monster coming out of their ears? I mean, really.

Finally, she was close enough to say something. I looked over at her, made eye contact and furrowed my eyebrows.

“You really shouldn’t have anything around his neck at that age because he could get strangled, and what is that eczema? It’s really bothered. You need to put something on it because I bet he’s miserable. “

Then, she walked away.

RUDE. What makes someone really have the urge to come up to a mother of two, by herself with well behaved kids and pick on the baby? My reaction? Absolutely nothing. I felt my heart go into my stomach and my face turn bright red. I was embarrassed and so upset that no words could form from my mouth. I even left the cart with all of my groceries right where it was, got the kids out of it and left. I didn’t want to see that face again or I might have punched it into a shelf filled with tomato sauce. Wouldn’t of that been classic. Yep, then mama would have been in a black and white car going for a ride to sit behind bars.

WHY would I ever put my child in harms way? WHY would I risk him being strangled? WHY wouldn’t I try to clear up his eczema? WHY is it a strangers concern?

Sometimes I truly don’t understand people. TRULY. The teething necklace is supposed to be of help to him, and as long as I’m in his presence I don’t see my child being strangled by it considering it’s not long enough to get caught on something to do so. His eczema is caused by food/seasonal allergies. Something of which we are still trying to get straight. The kid had a whole bunch of blueberries for breakfast that didn’t necessarily agree with his skin, apparently. My child is sensitive. But he wasn’t screaming, whining, flailing his arms around asking for mercy. He sure as heck wasn’t showing signs of misery. SO, UP YOURS LADY!

Can you tell this is a rant to a stranger who will never read this or know how I feel? She’s out there somewhere probably telling another sweet mother that her child’s hat doesn’t compliment his eyes or some bogus remark. Has this ever happened to you? I must have “please be rude to me” written across my forehead because otherwise I don’t understand the motives some people have…
